Louvre Abu Dhabi

Jean Nouvel · Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates · 2017

The Louvre Abu Dhabi, completed in 2017, is a prominent example of contemporary museum architecture. Designed by Jean Nouvel, its most striking feature is the large, permeable dome, inspired by traditional Arab architectural forms and the dappled light of palm trees. This "rain of light" effect is created by a complex geometric pattern of over 7,850 stars repeating in various sizes and angles across eight layers. The building is situated on Saadiyat Island and appears to float on water, with a significant portion of its structure surrounded by the sea. Its design integrates water channels and pools, enhancing the sense of a floating city. The museum houses a diverse collection spanning human history, aiming to foster cross-cultural understanding.
