Louisiana State Capitol
Weiss, Dreyfous and Seiferth · Baton Rouge, United States · 1932
Louisiana's State Capitol gives a traditional governmental programme the vertical image of an Art Deco tower. Opened in 1932, the building combines legislative rooms and offices with a tall central mass visible across Baton Rouge. Monumental steps, relief sculpture and a formal garden approach express the building's ceremonial role. Its architecture is especially useful for comparing the twentieth-century skyscraper with the older domed capitol type, while the lower wings retain a clear relationship with the civic landscape around them. Visiting: The working capitol has public visiting hours and security controls. Check observation-deck availability.
