Louisiana Museum of Modern Art

Jørgen Bo + Vilhelm Wohlert · Humlebæk, Denmark · 1958

Louisiana is a canonical example of museum architecture conceived as a dialogue between art, domestic scale and landscape. Jørgen Bo and Vilhelm Wohlert developed the museum from 1958 as a series of low pavilions and glazed corridors woven through an existing garden overlooking the Øresund. Rather than imposing a monumental object, the architecture frames changing views, courtyards and topography while allowing the collection to unfold gradually. Successive additions preserved this architectural language, making Louisiana an influential precedent for the landscape-integrated modern art museum.
