Looshaus

Adolf Loos · Vienna, Austria · 1912

Adolf Loos contrasted a richly faced commercial base with a restrained upper facade. Its position opposite the imperial palace made the absence of conventional ornament particularly provocative. The building offers a clear urban example of Loos’s ideas about materials, use and architectural expression. Visiting: Stands on Michaelerplatz opposite the Hofburg. The marble-clad ground floor is a bank, so the lower interior can be seen during opening hours; the floors above are offices and apartments.
