Long Museum West Bund

Atelier Deshaus · Shanghai, China · 2014

Atelier Deshaus transformed a former industrial waterfront site into the Long Museum West Bund by combining retained coal-unloading infrastructure with new in-situ concrete galleries. Repeated umbrella-like concrete vaults create large column-light spaces while allowing the building to mediate between art, industrial remnants and the riverfront landscape. The museum avoids a polished neutral-box language, instead making structure and the inherited site history central to the experience. Opened in 2014, it became a key cultural anchor in Shanghai’s West Bund redevelopment and an important example of contemporary Chinese adaptive urbanism.
