Loha Prasat at Wat Ratchanatdaram
Royal court artisans under King Rama III · Bangkok, Thailand · 1846
Loha Prasat is the distinctive multi-tiered metal-spired structure at the center of Wat Ratchanatdaram. Commissioned by Rama III, it adapts descriptions of earlier “metal castles” in India and Sri Lanka into a highly geometric Thai composition. Concentric galleries rise through diminishing levels to a central summit, while thirty-seven dark metal spires symbolize the virtues leading to enlightenment. From the exterior, the building reads as a disciplined pyramid of repeated roofs and finials; inside, stairs and meditation passages reveal a more intricate spatial order. Its unusual typology makes it a singular monument in Bangkok. The recorded date reflects the original nineteenth-century construction, with later restoration completing and refining the surviving fabric.
