Liverpool Metropolitan Cathedral

Frederick Gibberd · Liverpool, United Kingdom · 1967

Gibberd's circular cathedral gathers the congregation around a central sanctuary beneath a lantern of coloured glass. The concrete frame and crown-like roof make the building a striking departure from conventional longitudinal church plans. It stands above the earlier crypt designed by Edwin Lutyens, whose much larger scheme was never completed.
