Little Kyz Kala

Sasanian / early Islamic builders · Mary Region, Turkmenistan

Little Kyz Kala is a smaller companion to Great Kyz Kala within the archaeological landscape of Merv. Its surviving mud-brick walls preserve the same striking vertical corrugation used to stiffen and articulate the exterior, while the compact plan suggests a fortified elite residence rather than a military fortress alone. The monument developed through more than one historical phase and survives as a ruin, making precise dating difficult. Together with Great Kyz Kala, it provides rare evidence of sophisticated earthen architecture and elite domestic organization in late antique and early Islamic Central Asia.
