Lisbon Oceanarium
Peter Chermayeff / Cambridge Seven Associates · Lisbon, Portugal · 1998
The Lisbon Oceanarium was created for Expo '98 as a substantial aquarium building set within the waterfront landscape of Parque das Nações. Peter Chermayeff and Cambridge Seven developed its original architecture around the demanding environmental and technical requirements of marine habitats. Bridges and surrounding water help establish the sense of approaching a separate world, while the interior organizes visitors around large-scale aquatic displays. The project is useful for considering how exhibition design, life-support infrastructure and architecture operate together. The date in this record refers to the original 1998 oceanarium rather than later additions to the visitor complex. Visiting: The aquarium is ticketed. The waterfront setting is accessible separately.
