Lisbon Cruise Terminal
João Luís Carrilho da Graça · Lisbon, Portugal · 2017
João Luís Carrilho da Graça's Lisbon Cruise Terminal brings a large passenger-processing programme to the edge of the historic city. Opened in 2017, the building uses a clear, pale horizontal volume and a carefully articulated roof to mediate between ships, waterfront infrastructure and the nearby urban fabric. The design gives particular attention to circulation and the possibility of public space around a secure operational programme. Its low profile preserves the visual importance of the hillside city behind it. The building should be read together with the riverfront promenade and port boundary rather than only from the passenger entrance. Visiting: A working passenger terminal with controlled interiors. Public promenade access is a separate exterior experience.
