Lenin Mausoleum

Alexey Shchusev · Moscow, Russia · 1930

Alexey Shchusev’s permanent Lenin Mausoleum is a compact stepped composition of red granite, black labradorite and other dark stone set directly against the Kremlin wall. Its abstract stacked volumes draw on ancient funerary architecture while avoiding conventional classical ornament. The building’s small physical scale is offset by its extraordinary political and spatial importance within Red Square, where it also functioned as a ceremonial reviewing platform. Completed in 1930 after earlier temporary wooden versions, the mausoleum became one of the most recognizable architectural symbols of the Soviet state.
