Legislative Palace of Uruguay
Vittorio Meano; Gaetano Moretti · Montevideo, Uruguay · 1925
Uruguay's Legislative Palace gives parliamentary government an expansive classical building above Montevideo's surrounding streets. Vittorio Meano's project was developed by Gaetano Moretti and inaugurated in 1925. Stonework, broad stairs and a strongly ordered exterior create a ceremonial approach, while the interior accommodates legislative chambers and major circulation spaces. The project is especially useful for examining how a national institution uses material richness, scale and alignment to distinguish itself within the city without relying on a single dominant tower or dome.
