Laurentian Library
Michelangelo · Florence, Italy · 1571
Michelangelo's Laurentian Library inserts a dramatic sequence of vestibule and reading room into the cloister complex of San Lorenzo. In the ricetto, compressed wall articulation, paired columns set into recesses and an expanding triple stair make architectural elements seem almost mobile. The long reading room reverses that tension through regular bays, timber desks, controlled daylight and a patterned floor. The project is fundamental to Mannerist architecture because familiar classical parts are used with deliberate spatial instability. Michelangelo left Florence before completion, and Ammannati and Vasari interpreted his designs. The date marks the library's opening, not the end of a single uninterrupted construction campaign.
