Lamanai

Maya builders (individual architects not recorded) · Indian Church, Belize

Lamanai occupies a long-lived Maya settlement beside the New River Lagoon. Its temples, terraces and sculptural elements preserve evidence of architectural development over many centuries. The High Temple and other principal structures establish distinct points within a landscape linked by walking routes rather than a single compact square. The relationship between elevated monuments, vegetation and water makes the visit particularly revealing. No one completion date represents a site whose occupation continued well beyond the period associated with many better-known Classic Maya cities. Visiting: An archaeological reserve normally reached by organized road or river transport. Admission and transport are separate costs. No single documented completion year applies to this multi-phase historic site.
