La Tête Carrée

Sacha Sosno; Francis Chapus; Yves Bayard · Nice, France · 2002

La Tête Carrée is one of Nice’s most direct examples of architecture as urban sculpture. Conceived by artist Sacha Sosno with architects Francis Chapus and Yves Bayard, the building transforms the idea of a public library and administrative facility into a giant inhabited square head. Instead of treating public infrastructure as neutral background, the project makes the building itself an immediately recognizable civic landmark along the Promenade des Arts. The dark gridded surface, tilted neck, and abstracted human form create a playful but controlled relationship between art, architecture, and city branding. It is especially interesting beside MAMAC and the surrounding cultural district, where public institutions are expressed through strong geometric icons. For visitors, the project works less as a conventional interior destination and more as a memorable visual marker in the urban sequence between Place Garibaldi, the museum district, and central Nice.
