La Plata Cathedral
Ernesto Meyer; Pedro Benoit; Emilio Coutaret · La Plata, Argentina · 1932
La Plata Cathedral occupies a prominent position facing Plaza Moreno in the planned centre of the city. Its Gothic Revival design developed through the work of Ernesto Meyer, Pedro Benoit and other contributors, with major campaigns extending across more than a century. The brick exterior makes its material construction especially apparent, while the large interior establishes a strongly ordered sequence of supports and vaults. The cathedral's relationship with the square and opposite civic buildings explains its role within La Plata's wider urban plan. Visiting: The cathedral is a working church. Museum and tower access have separate ticketing. Major tower works were completed later, in 1999.
