La Malmaison Contemporary Art Centre
Vianey; Blondel · Cannes, France · 1864
La Malmaison is a compact but important heritage building on La Croisette, originally associated with the Grand Hôtel complex and now transformed into a contemporary art centre. Its architectural value comes from the contrast between a nineteenth-century villa character and its new cultural role in the dense, commercial setting of Cannes’ most famous boulevard. A major renovation completed for the 2025 reopening expanded and modernized the exhibition spaces while preserving the building’s historic identity. The result is a useful case study in small-scale adaptive reuse: a Belle Époque fragment is reactivated as a public cultural address rather than treated merely as nostalgic scenery.
