Arata Isozaki combines a formal civic exterior with a rich sequence of circular and geometric interior spaces. The main hall is shaped around acoustic performance rather than a neutral box, and the building's foyers, stairs and patterned surfaces reveal Isozaki's characteristic interest in architectural quotation and theatrical movement. It is a strong counterpoint to the quieter modernism of nearby contemporary museum projects.
