Kwame Nkrumah Mausoleum

Don Arthur · Accra, Ghana · 1992

The Kwame Nkrumah Mausoleum is the focal point of a landscaped memorial park dedicated to Ghana’s first president. Don Arthur shaped the monument as a sharply rising stone-clad form set above a reflective pool, using a controlled axial approach to give the relatively compact building a strong ceremonial presence. The interior contains Nkrumah’s burial chamber while surrounding sculptures and water features extend the memorial into the park. Opened in 1992, the project is an important piece of Ghana’s architectural culture of national memory.
