Kuwait Towers

Sune Lindström + Malene Bjørn · Kuwait City, Kuwait · 1979

Kuwait Towers transform water-storage infrastructure into a national skyline monument. Three slender concrete shafts support blue-green patterned spheres containing water tanks, observation spaces and a restaurant, creating a futuristic composition along the Gulf waterfront. Sune Lindström and Malene Bjørn developed the towers as part of a wider modern water-distribution system but gave the utilitarian structures a deliberately ceremonial image. Officially opened in 1979, the ensemble became one of Kuwait’s defining architectural symbols and a landmark example of infrastructure being designed as public monument rather than hidden engineering.
