Kulturhuset Stockholm

Peter Celsing · Stockholm, Sweden · 1974

Peter Celsing’s Kulturhuset was conceived as an open cultural institution at the heart of Stockholm’s post-war city center. Completed in 1974 beside Sergels torg, its broad glass façade exposes stacked public floors and cultural activity to the square. The building combines robust concrete structure with a deliberately transparent civic frontage, reflecting the era’s ambition to make culture accessible and visible. Its relationship to the surrounding modernist redevelopment makes it essential for understanding both Swedish brutalism and the transformation of central Stockholm in the second half of the twentieth century.
