House of Culture Helsinki
Alvar Aalto · Helsinki, Finland · 1958
Alvar Aalto’s House of Culture was completed in 1958 as a multifunctional complex containing a concert hall, offices and spaces for political and cultural activity. Its best-known element is the fan-shaped red-brick auditorium, whose curved masonry wall contrasts with the rectilinear copper-clad office wing. A lower connecting volume and entrance court bind the composition together. The project is a key work from Aalto’s red-brick period, combining expressive massing with detailed attention to acoustics, furniture and the experience of arriving through a protected urban forecourt.
