Kotelnicheskaya Embankment Building

Dmitry Chechulin + Andrei Rostkovsky · Moscow, Russia · 1952

The Kotelnicheskaya Embankment Building is one of Moscow’s seven Stalin-era high-rises. A tall central tower rises above stepped residential wings at the confluence of the Moskva and Yauza rivers, combining apartments with shops, a cinema and other amenities. Dmitry Chechulin and Andrei Rostkovsky used a highly symmetrical, vertically emphasized composition of stone cladding, setbacks and spire to create a monumental urban landmark. Completed in 1952, the building fused housing with state representation and became one of the defining elements of Moscow’s post-war skyline.
