Konark Sun Temple

Eastern Ganga workshops · Konark, India

Konark's Sun Temple was conceived as a colossal stone chariot, with carved wheels and sculptural horses giving architectural form to its dedication to Surya. The surviving halls and platform reveal the ambition of the original complex. Its present fragmentary condition makes the relationship between stone construction, imagery and the lost main sanctuary especially apparent. Visiting: Entry is ticketed, with higher rates for foreign visitors.
