Knesset Building

Joseph Klarwein · Jerusalem, Israel · 1966

The Knesset Building, Israel's parliament in Jerusalem, was completed in 1966. Designed by Joseph Klarwein, its minimalist forms and use of local stone reflect a blend of international modernism and regional architectural traditions. The building is characterized by its clean lines, flat roofs, and a connection to the landscape, symbolic of a new nation establishing its identity. Notable features include a large, open plaza and a distinctive entrance adorned with a large wall relief by Dani Karavan depicting the "Peace Wall." The interior houses significant artworks, most notably tapestries and mosaics by Marc Chagall, which were commissioned specifically for the building and depict themes from Jewish history and biblical prophecy, adding cultural and spiritual depth to the legislative space.
