Kingo Houses

Jørn Utzon · Helsingør, Denmark · 1958

Built as a cluster of courtyard houses, Jørn Utzon’s Kingo Houses reinterpret the traditional Danish farmstead through a modern modular system. Each L-shaped dwelling encloses a private garden while the repeated units adjust to the landscape, producing a dense settlement with strong individual identity. Completed in 1958, the project became an important model for humane low-rise housing and influenced Utzon’s later Fredensborg development. Its significance lies less in a singular object than in the relationship between house, wall, courtyard, terrain and shared circulation.
