Kazan Family Center

Dashi Namdakov · Kazan, Russia · 2013

The Kazan Family Center is a marriage-registration palace shaped as an enormous ceremonial cauldron, or kazan, raised above a sculptural base on the riverbank opposite the Kremlin. Artist and designer Dashi Namdakov developed the image directly from the city’s name and Tatar cultural symbolism, turning a civic service building into a monumental urban icon. The circular upper volume contains ceremonial halls and an observation platform with panoramic views of the city. Opened in 2013, the center demonstrates a deliberately figurative approach to contemporary civic architecture unusual among Russia’s more abstract recent public projects.
