Kavanagh Building

Sánchez, Lagos y de la Torre · Buenos Aires, Argentina · 1936

The Kavanagh Building was one of the world’s tallest reinforced-concrete residential towers when completed. Its stepped massing responds to setback regulations while creating terraces and a strong vertical profile overlooking Plaza San Martín. The building combines Art Deco abstraction with the functional organization of luxury apartments and modern services. Its tapered silhouette became a defining element of the Buenos Aires skyline and an important milestone in the development of high-rise housing in Latin America.
