Kariakoo Market

Beda J. Amuli · Dar es Salaam, Tanzania · 1974

Kariakoo Market is one of Tanzania’s most important works of post-independence architecture. Beda J. Amuli organized the large public market around a powerful concrete structural system that provides shade, ventilation and large flexible trading floors in Dar es Salaam’s tropical climate. Roof openings and repetitive structural elements give the interior a distinctive filtered daylight while the exterior remains robust and infrastructural. Completed in 1974, the market demonstrates how brutalist construction could be adapted to dense everyday commerce rather than reserved for monumental state institutions.
