Karen Demirchyan Sports and Concerts Complex

Arthur Tarkhanyan + Gurgen Musheghian · Yerevan, Armenia · 1983

The Karen Demirchyan Complex is a large sports and performance venue whose faceted concrete-and-glass mass rises from the Tsitsernakaberd landscape above Yerevan. Arthur Tarkhanyan and Gurgen Musheghian organized arenas, concert halls and public circulation within a strongly symmetrical composition shaped by broad stairs and a dramatic roof profile. Interior structural and ceiling systems are intentionally expressive rather than hidden. Opened in 1983, the building is one of Soviet Armenia’s most ambitious late-modern public works and a major example of large-scale cultural infrastructure designed as a national landmark.
