Kamakura Bunkakan Tsurugaoka Museum

Junzo Sakakura · Kamakura, Japan · 1951

Originally built as the Museum of Modern Art, Kamakura, Junzo Sakakura's pavilion is a key early example of postwar Japanese modernism. A light upper volume, slender supports and shaded open ground level establish a delicate relationship with the pond and shrine landscape. The building has been preserved and adapted as the Tsurugaoka Museum, allowing its original structural clarity and promenade to remain legible.
