John Andrews Building

John Andrews · Toronto, Canada · 1966

John Andrews’s original University of Toronto Scarborough building is organized as a powerful concrete spine descending through the ravine landscape. Long internal corridors, bridges and stepped levels connect academic spaces while allowing the topography to remain visible and spatially active. The architecture treats circulation as a social interior rather than a secondary hallway system. Opened in 1966, the building established the identity of the new suburban campus and remains a major Canadian example of brutalism integrated with landscape.
