Edwin Lutyens designed the original gallery as a formal setting for art beside Joubert Park. Its entrance, courtyards and exhibition rooms give the institution a civic architectural character. Later additions and changing use form part of the building’s long relationship with central Johannesburg. Visiting: The historic Joubert Park gallery building is closed for restoration/redevelopment. Confirm any off-site collection displays separately; do not plan a normal gallery interior visit here.
