Joanina Library
João Carvalho Ferreira · Coimbra, Portugal · 1728
The Joanina Library occupies a prominent position within the University of Coimbra's historic precinct. Built in the early eighteenth century under the patronage of King João V, it combines a comparatively restrained external presence with richly decorated Baroque interiors. João Carvalho Ferreira directed its construction, completed in 1728. The sequence of historic reading rooms brings timber shelving, painted surfaces and gilded ornament into a coherent setting for the university's collections. Its architecture should be considered alongside the surrounding palace courtyard, where the library forms one element of a larger institutional ensemble rather than an isolated attraction. Visiting: The historic library is visited with a timed university ticket. Academic library access is separate.
