Jingumae Toilet

NIGO · Tokyo, Japan · 2021

Jingumae Toilet, designed by NIGO, takes the form of a small house, using a pitched roof and colorful detailing to create a public restroom that feels familiar rather than institutional. This approach is especially effective in changing the emotional perception of a public toilet: instead of appearing anonymous, harsh, or hidden, the building presents itself as approachable and almost domestic. Located in the visually active Jingumae area, the project uses playfulness as an urban strategy. Its scale and image make the facility easy to identify while softening the boundary between infrastructure and everyday architecture. Within THE TOKYO TOILET initiative, Jingumae Toilet shows that public amenities can rely on warmth, memory, and popular visual culture as much as on formal minimalism or advanced technology.
