Jingu Dori Park Toilet

Tadao Ando · Tokyo, Japan · 2020

Jingu Dori Park Toilet, designed by Tadao Ando, translates the architect’s characteristic interest in light, enclosure, and calm into an unusually small civic structure. The circular plan is wrapped by vertical louvers, producing a layered threshold between the public park and the private act of using the restroom. Although modest in scale, the project carries the spatial discipline associated with Ando’s work: clarity of form, controlled movement, and a quiet relationship between architecture and its surroundings. As part of THE TOKYO TOILET project, it demonstrates how a public restroom can be treated as a serious architectural commission rather than a leftover service element. Its restrained geometry and careful enclosure make it a compact example of public architecture that is both protective and open to the city.
