Jim Thompson House

Jim Thompson with traditional Thai house builders · Bangkok, Thailand · 1959

The Jim Thompson House is an influential act of architectural collecting and recomposition. Thompson assembled six traditional teak houses from central Thailand beside a Bangkok canal, adapting their orientation, circulation and details to create a modern residence and setting for his Southeast Asian art collection. Raised floors, steep tiled roofs, deep eaves and shaded verandas retain the environmental intelligence of the source buildings, while relocated stairs, joined rooms and selective glazing support a new domestic program. The garden and canal edge are integral to the experience, softening the transition from dense contemporary Bangkok. Now a museum, the house shaped international appreciation of Thai vernacular architecture and remains a key case study in adaptive reuse.
