Jantar Mantar, Jaipur

Jai Singh II and court astronomers · Jaipur, India · 1734

Jantar Mantar gives astronomical instruments the scale and permanence of architecture. Large masonry forms allow observation through carefully controlled geometry, orientation and shadow. The collection offers an unusual kind of built environment in which the relationship between a visitor's body, a measured surface and the movement of the sun becomes directly visible. Visiting: Entry is ticketed; a composite ticket also covers other Jaipur monuments.
