Iximche

Kaqchikel Maya builders (individual architects not recorded) · Tecpán Guatemala, Guatemala

Iximche preserves the ceremonial and political centre of a Kaqchikel Maya capital founded in the fifteenth century. Temple platforms, palace remains, plazas and ballcourts occupy a ridge protected by deep ravines. The site is valuable for its urban arrangement as well as for individual structures: separate groups of buildings establish a sequence of public and more restricted spaces. Its architecture developed through successive campaigns, so no single completion date can accurately describe the whole archaeological complex. Visiting: An archaeological site with ticketed admission. There is no single documented completion year. No single documented completion year applies to this multi-phase historic site.
