Istanbul Modern
Renzo Piano Building Workshop · Istanbul, Turkey · 2023
The current Istanbul Modern building by Renzo Piano Building Workshop occupies the Galataport waterfront with a low, horizontally layered museum facing the Bosphorus. Transparent ground-level public spaces support stacked galleries above, while a shallow reflective roof terrace reconnects visitors with the water and city skyline. The façades use repeated metal panels that modulate daylight and give the building a changing surface at different distances. Opened in 2023, the museum replaces Istanbul Modern’s earlier adapted warehouse and gives the institution a purpose-built contemporary home within a major waterfront redevelopment.
