Institute of Contemporary Art, Boston
Diller Scofidio + Renfro · Boston, United States · 2006
Boston's Institute of Contemporary Art places its galleries above a public waterfront edge. Diller Scofidio + Renfro's building, opened in 2006, uses a pronounced cantilever and stepped exterior space to establish a relationship with the harbour. The route through the building alternates between exhibition rooms, circulation and framed views of the water. Its architecture is most revealing in section: the museum's larger upper volume shelters activity below while creating a distinct public presence along the city's changing shoreline. Visiting: Regular museum admission is ticketed, with designated free periods. The waterfront exterior is a separate experience.
