India Gate

Edwin Lutyens · Delhi, India · 1931

Edwin Lutyens's India Gate anchors the eastern end of New Delhi's ceremonial avenue. The large stone arch uses a restrained monumental vocabulary, with inscriptions and a deep central opening carrying the memorial programme. Its architectural effect depends equally on the surrounding lawns, long approaches and position within the capital's planned civic landscape. Visiting: Free and open around the clock, at the east end of Kartavya Path. The National War Memorial is just behind it.
