Independence Monument

Turkmen state design team · Ashgabat, Turkmenistan · 2001

The Independence Monument is the focal point of a vast ceremonial park in southern Ashgabat. A tall white-marble tower rises from a broad complex of domed halls, fountains, sculpture and formal landscaping, creating a monumental composition intended to represent Turkmen statehood after 1991. The 118-meter vertical element gives the ensemble a city-scale presence while the lower spaces function as commemorative and museum areas. Completed around the tenth anniversary of independence, the project is characteristic of Ashgabat’s post-Soviet transformation through large, highly controlled symbolic landscapes.
