Independence Memorial Museum

Mansudae Overseas Projects · Windhoek, Namibia · 2014

The Independence Memorial Museum is a tall copper-colored civic monument placed beside Windhoek’s historic government precinct. Designed and constructed with North Korean participation, the building combines a museum tower, broad ceremonial stairs, monumental sculpture and panoramic upper-level spaces. Its assertive verticality and symbolic program contrast sharply with the nearby German colonial architecture. Opened in 2014, the complex is a clear example of contemporary state memorial architecture in southern Africa and of the transnational design networks behind many recent African monuments.
