Independence Arch
Public Works Department of Ghana · Accra, Ghana · 1961
Accra’s Independence Arch forms the ceremonial edge of Black Star Square and was created as part of the capital’s post-independence civic landscape. A broad horizontal beam spans between two tapered supports, creating a monumental gateway aligned with national celebrations and public processions. Its restrained modern language contrasts with the more symbolic Black Star monument nearby. Completed in the early years of Ghanaian independence, the structure demonstrates how modernist abstraction was used to give a newly independent state a highly legible civic image.
