Huế's Imperial City encloses a sequence of gates, courts and former royal buildings within substantial walls. The surviving and reconstructed spaces reveal a carefully ordered relationship between ceremony, administration and residence. The complex is best experienced as a layered landscape whose architecture records both imperial planning and later loss and conservation. Visiting: Entry is ticketed; the Citadel walls, moat and flag tower can be seen freely from outside.
