Church of Cristo Obrero

Eladio Dieste · Atlántida, Uruguay · 1960

Eladio Dieste’s church is a masterwork of reinforced brick construction. Thin undulating walls and a double-curved brick roof achieve remarkable spans with minimal material, while the structure itself generates the building’s spatial and spiritual character. Light enters through colored glazing embedded in the rippling side walls and through carefully shaped openings. The church demonstrates Dieste’s fusion of engineering economy, craft and architectural expression and is among Uruguay’s most important contributions to twentieth-century architecture.
