Hungarian Parliament Building

Imre Steindl · Budapest, Hungary · 1904

Imre Steindl’s Hungarian Parliament Building stretches along the Danube as a vast neo-Gothic legislative palace organized around a central dome and symmetrical chamber wings. The exterior’s dense pinnacles, towers and arcades conceal a highly ordered internal sequence of ceremonial stairs, halls and debating chambers. Constructed over nearly two decades and fully completed in 1904, the building translates medieval and Gothic imagery into a modern parliamentary institution of exceptional scale. Its riverfront position and dome make it the dominant civic landmark of Budapest and a key work of late historicist architecture.
