Hoysaleswara Temple

Hoysala workshops · Halebidu, India

Hoysaleswara Temple combines paired sanctuaries with an exceptionally elaborate carved exterior. The low, spreading form is read through repeated projections, horizontal sculptural bands and detailed figures worked in soapstone. Walking around the platform reveals how the building's complex geometry and narrative decoration operate together rather than as separate architectural and sculptural systems. Visiting: A religious site. Basic access is normally free, with local worship, dress and photography restrictions; additional visitor attractions can be charged.
