Hotel Negresco

Édouard-Jean Niermans · Nice, France · 1913

Hotel Negresco is one of the defining Belle Époque landmarks of Nice and one of the most recognizable buildings on the Promenade des Anglais. Opened in 1913 and associated with architect Édouard-Jean Niermans, the hotel combines grand resort architecture with theatrical urban presence. Its famous pink dome, formal façade, and richly decorated interiors express the luxury-hotel culture that shaped the French Riviera at the beginning of the twentieth century. Unlike many hotels that function mainly as accommodation, the Negresco has become a civic image of Nice: it frames the seafront, participates in the skyline of the Baie des Anges, and operates as a living collection of French decorative arts. The building’s architectural value comes from this double role, as both a working hotel and a historical object. Its continued adaptation, restoration, and highly curated interiors make it a strong example of how hospitality architecture can become part of a city’s cultural identity.
